This depends on two factors: 1. the sex of the horse (additional options are available for mares compared to stallions and geldings) and 2. for mares or stallions, it is also decisive whether they are actively used for breeding. A corresponding setting can be found on the respective horse. The following event types are available:
Event | Available for |
---|---|
Farrier, worming, dentist, vaccination, swab test, other | all horses |
Heat signs | not pregnant mares |
Follicle check, insemination | active but not pregnant mares |
Daily birth control, foal birth | pregnant mares |
Pregnancy check | active mares regardless of pregnancy status |
The heat calendar is displayed under the following conditions:
If a mare foaled more than 9 days ago and the foal rosette has not been entered, the calendar is not displayed because it is then assumed that this is not desired.
There are two ways to do this: 1. if you document an insemination, a pregnancy is automatically created for the mare in the background. Alternatively, you can also enter the pregnancy directly by clicking on the multifunction button in the detailed view of the mare and clicking on the plus sign at the top.
This display is automatically generated for pregnant mares when the insemination date is entered. The app assumes an average gestation period of 336 days.

Breeding horses is a fascinating and demanding task that requires a great deal of knowledge and dedication. From choosing the right mare and stallion to the successful birth of a foal, there are numerous factors to consider. In this guide, we would like to provide you with valuable tips and information on horse breeding and foal rearing.
The choice of breeding animals is the first step in horse breeding. An experienced horse breeder makes sure that both the mare and the stallion are healthy, productive and genetically high-quality animals. Breeds such as those offered by Westphalian horse breeders or Rhineland horse breeders are particularly important here.
Insemination can be carried out both artificially and naturally, known as natural horse breeding. Artificial insemination often involves the use of TG semen or fresh semen shipment. The mare’s broodmare plays a decisive role here, as the right time for insemination is crucial for success.
A well-prepared foal birth is the be-all and end-all for a smooth process. Horse breeders should have a foal birth checklist to hand that lists all the necessary steps and materials. It is important to monitor the foal birth signs and know the foal birth process. Especially in the winter months, foaling in winter is a challenge that requires special preparation.
The moment of foal birth is an exciting event for every horse breeder. It is important to keep an eye on the foal birth ph value and to be prepared for possible foal birth complications. Careful foal birth preparation and the question “foal birth what do you need” are crucial to support the newborn in the best possible way.
After the birth, the intensive foal rearing phase begins. A healthy foal needs a lot of care and attention. The foal show and foaling period are important phases in which the foals take their first steps and develop. Breeder apps such as Fohlenabc and Fohlennetzwerk can be useful helpers here.
Within horse breeding, there are specialized areas such as dressage horse breeding and show jumper breeding. Dressage foals and stallion breeding require specific knowledge and experience in order to promote the desired characteristics in the breeding animals.
Horse breeding and foal rearing are demanding but also extremely rewarding activities. With the right preparation and the necessary knowledge, horse breeders can raise successful and healthy foals. Whether you are an experienced breeder or new to horse breeding, this guide will provide you with a comprehensive overview and valuable tips for your breeding.
